Karen Schairer, and Outside Sales Rep. out of Waukesha, WI was recently announced a finalist in the 3rd Annual IAPD Plastics Design Competition. Karen submitted her application for the food processing industry and was picked as a finalist in the contest. As a finalist, Karen was invited to attend the IAPD Convention & Expo in San Diego, CA last month to present her application. This presentation won her 3rd place in the competition.
Karen’s application was a cover for a large barrel used to clean root vegetables in a food processing operation. The barrels spin at a high speed, to wash the mud and dirt from the vegetables. Once the vegetables are clean, the cover is removed from the barrel and the vegetables are sorted. The previous barrel cover had been made from aluminum, but it was difficult to wrap around the large barrels and the workers were cutting themselves on the sharp edges. Tivar H.O.T. was selected as the replacement material because it could withstand the high temperatures reached when the barrel is spinning, plus its chemical resistance properties allows it to stand up to the chemical wash applied between uses. In addition, it is an FDA-compliant material.
This contest helps bring attention to the performance plastics industry and the unique ways plastics are being used to solve problems and increase performance. CONGRATULATIONS Karen on your success!
